Since cash is the only way of payment in private houses, you need to have cash if renting in one of those.

Always carry your passport when exchanging money at banks or CADECAS.

If your card can not be used in Cuba, there is a new option for you: Prepaid Card
All visitors and tourists that come to Cuba, having credit and debt cards which are not acepted to use in Cuba, could apply for a prepaid card when already in our territory.
Such card is valid to pay services and products in the freely convertible currency comerce network in Cuba.Cash withdrawals will be made only in CUP (Cuban pesos), at the ATMs, at the current official exchange rate.
Requirements:
ID document: foreign Passport, and cash to pay 1000 USD,500 USD or 200 USD, to recharge the prepaid card.This amount will be printed on the card as well as its expiration date.

The prepaid card may be requested at: Banco de Crédito y Comercio (BANDEC) and Casas de Cambio S.A. (CADECA)
In case of doubts, clarification or loss of the card, please call 80201996 or go to any BANDEC branch in the country.

The national currency in Cuba is the Cuban Peso (CUP), which is equivalent to 100 cents. Bills of 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 pesos are in circulation, as well as fractional coins of 1 and 3 pesos and 1, 2, 5 and 20 centavos.
In Holguín, Cuba, some credit cards can be used, as long as they have not been issued by North American banks or their affiliates (Visa, MasterCard, Access, Eurocard, Banamex, among others, with their specifications) although it is recommended to always carry currency in cash.
