The province has been cradle of outstanding figures of the Cuban music. María Teresa Vera (1895-1965), Cuban composer and troubadours (born in Guanajay); Luis Marquetti (1901-1992, Alquízar), composer and bolero singer; Arturo Sandoval, trumpeter and jazzman (Artemisa), Enrique Jorrín, musician, Chachachá’s father (Candelaria 1926-1987); Pancho Amat, outstanding guitar player and tresista (Guira de Melena 1950); Silvio Rodríguez (San Antonio de los Baños, 1946), famous singer-songwriter, founder and emblematic figure of the “Nueva Trova” (songs with social-political themes); Polo Montañéz, el “Guajiro Natural” popular singer and music country composer, well-known internationally, native from Sierra del Rosario and the Cuban-Canadian pop-singer-composer Alex Cuba (Alexis Puente), Artemisa. Museum in honor to the singer and composer Polo Montañéz, who was born on July 5th, 1955. He achieved national and international fame with unique music style and the freshness of his songs. Well-known Latin American and Caribbean singers have included pieces of this important author in their albums.
